The Chico Economic Index and Confidence Survey needed a complete redesign to make it easier for readers to correctly interpret the data and information being presented. An approach was taken to turn all the years of physical data into a graphical representation which could be easily updated on a quarterly basis. An infographic style was used on the designed, which allowed the data to be represented in new ways. The newly redesigned documents have increased distribution and have received all very positive feedback.
The Chico Economic Index measures the quarterly performance of the local Chico economy, using five seasonally adjusted and equally weighted categories. The categories include Sales Tax, Transient Occupancy Tax, Building Permits Issued, Employment, and Average Housing Sales Prices. Using 2007 as the base year, the Chico Economic Index lets the local community measure exactly how our economy has been performing quarter to quarter and year to year.
The Business Confidence Survey is bi-annual, five question surrey answered by local business owners and managers. The responses are all aggregated and a score between 0 and 100 is computed. A score over 50 indicates an overall optimism about the local economy. The survey is helping business leaders make educated decisions.
These two designs below are some templates GVB started out with. As you can see the original form was number heavy and not very visually interesting. My goal was to make this data heavy form easy to comphrehend from all viewpoints, as well as make a design that draws your eye to different components.
